HC Deb 24 July 1963 vol 681 cc174-5W
62. Mr. Speir

asked the Minister of Transport if he will announce his decision on the Haltwhistle-Alston railway closure proposals.

Mr. Marples

I have given careful consideration to all the circumstances, including a full examination of the road improvements which would be necessary before an alternative bus service could be provided. As a result I have decided to accept the recommendation of the North Eastern Transport Users Consultative Committee, endorsed by the Central Transport Consultative Committee, that the passenger service between Haltwhistle and Alston should be maintained. The Railways Board have been so informed.
