asked the Minister of Transport what reply he has sent to the Ramblers' Association in respect of their submissions about the effect that the proposed closure of rail services would have upon the opportunities for town dwellers to visit country areas.

I am sending the hon. Member a copy of the reply which has been sent to the Ramblers' Association.

55. Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister of Transport how many, and which, Transport Users Consultative Committees have received objections to proposed closures of branch lines and stations of the Railways Board on 9th September, 1963, of which formal notice has been given; and which branch lines and stations are the subject of such objections.

The Railways Board has given notice of proposals to close on 9th September 47 passenger services. On 20th July objections had been received by 9 Transport Users Consultative Committees to 43 of these proposals. In these cases

asked the Minister of Transport what representations he has received from the National Council of the Ramblers' Association concerning the proposed closure of rail services and the effect on townspeople wishing to reach the countryside; and what reply he has sent.

closures cannot now be effected unless and until I give my consent. The list of opposed cases is long and I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The Association has sent me a resolution passed by its National Council expressing its concern at the possible effect of the closure of passenger services to National Parks and other areas of scenic beauty. I am sending the hon. Member a copy of my reply.
