asked the Minister of Labour how many youths and girls were unemployed in the Stornoway exchange area at the latest count; and what steps he is now taking to find places for them in suitable employment in the island area.

146 on 15th July. Stornoway is part of the Highlands and Islands development district, and the Government will continue its efforts to increase employment opportunities generally in the area. The Youth Employment Service is doing all it can to help the young people find suitable jobs.

forecasts of the future composition of their labour force and of probable changes in the numbers and types of craftsmen employed. The information obtained from this inquiry will be particularly important for the implementation of the Government's proposals on industrial training, and I hope that the firms concerned will co-operate fully with my regional officers who will be carrying out the inquiry.

The results of this and other studies being undertaken by the unit will be available next year.
