Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will give an estimate of the average number of hours per week allocated to mathematics and science subjects in the secondary departments of direct grant schools;

(2) if he will give an estimate of the average number of hours per week allocated to mathematics and science subjects, respectively, in junior secondary and senior secondary courses of local authority schools.

NOTE: Science is included in every junior secondary course and, until 1960, was studied by all pupils in the first three years of senior secondary courses before they changed from a general course to a more specialised one. In accordance with the recommendations made by the Working Party on the Curriculum of the Senior Secondary School, the change to a more specialised course will in future normally take place at the end of the second year of the senior secondary course.
