§ 37. Mr. Jannerasked the Minister of Labour how many workmen have died as a result of falling off buildings or deficient scaffolding in the last three years; and what action is taken to ensure that all scaffolding is safe before it is used.
§ Mr. WoodThe number of workmen who died as a result of falling off buildings or scaffolding while engaged in building operations covered by the Factories Acts during the years 1956–1958 was 292. The deaths due to falls from scaffolding were 118, but I cannot say in how many cases the scaffolding was deficient. There are requirements in the Building (Safety, Health and Welfare) 155W Regulations made under the Factories Acts aimed at ensuring that scaffolding is safe before it is used.
