HC Deb 16 December 1959 vol 615 c167W
116. Mr. Mellish

asked the Minister of Transport how many schemes for new roads were submitted during the last three years; how many of such schemes were approved by his Department; and what was the total capital cost of such works, respectively.

Mr. Marples

During the period from 1st April. 1957, 72 schemes were approved each costing £100,000 or more for major improvements and new construction on Classified Roads. The total capital cost of these schemes is £52,350,000. I am unable to say without extensive research how many schemes, if any, were submitted but not approved. In the same period 84 such schemes on Trunk Roads (including Motorways) were undertaken at a cost of £79,484,953.
