HC Deb 14 December 1959 vol 615 c89W
27. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the death rate from lung cancer is still increasing rapidly; and whether, in view of the failure of the campaign to affect smokers, he will initiate an international investigation to seek an effective means of prevention and cure of this disease.

Mr. Walker-Smith

I am aware of the continuing increase in the number of deaths from lung cancer though there is some evidence that the rate of increase is slowing down. So far as smoking is concerned, the Government's intention is that the possible consequences should made widely known to the public and I believe this to be largely achieved. Intensive national and international study on methods of prevention and cure is already in progress.
