HC Deb 09 December 1958 vol 597 cc18-9W
57. Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett

asked the Secretary to the Treasury at what level the Cost-of-Living Index was standing when the most recent Pensions (Increase) Act was drafted; by how much the index has risen since then; and how this compares with the increases in pensions granted under that Act.

Mr. Simon

Notice of presentation of the most recent Pensions (Increase) Act was given to the House on 3rd February, 1956. The index of retail prices now current stood at 100 in January and February, 1956, and by October, 1958, it had risen to 109. In general the 1956 Act increased by up to 10 per cent. pensions based on salary scales which had been improved in recent years.
