HC Deb 27 March 1957 vol 567 cc111-2W
61. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation on what basis the news theatre at London Airport is leased; on what date the lease commenced; and why it is not being used.

62. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what sum of public money was spent on the construction of the news theatre at London Airport; and on what date it was completed.

Mr. Neave

This cinema was completed in March, 1956, and was let on a concession basis for five years from 9th August, 1956, a percentage of the gross takings to be paid to my Department. Last month the concessionaires informed us that as they could not recruit staff they were unable to operate the cinema. They therefore gave notice to terminate their contract as from 9th August, 1957. It is difficult to assess accurately the cost of construction as the cinema is an integral part of the Queen's Building, but £3,240 has been spent on technical equipment, and £3,436 on furnishings.
