HC Deb 04 February 1957 vol 564 cc13-4W
102. Mr. P. Noel-Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will lay the question of the present armed conflict on the Aden-Yemen frontier before the General Assembly of the United Nations; and if he will propose the despatch of an impartial commission of inquiry to supervise a ceasefire, to report on the facts of the recent fighting, and to propose the demarcation of a definite frontier between the Aden Protectorate and the Yemen.

105. Mr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will call in the services of the United Nations observers in the dispute in the Aden Protectorate.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

The facts of the situation on the Aden Protectorate-Yemeni frontiers were described by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland in an Answer on 22nd January and in Answers on 23rd January. Full details of activities in the frontier areas are given daily in Press communiqués issued by the Aden Government. Her Majesty's Government are keeping the possibilities mentioned by the right hon. Members in view. The United Kingdom representative to the United Nations has rebutted the false charges made there by the Yemeni delegation.

Her Majesty's Government still hope that the Yemeni Government will shortly agree to a meeting on the frontier between officials of the two Governments, and they would prefer to see what result is achieved by these local direct talks and further direct diplomatic exchanges before considering what steps might be taken in connection with the United Nations.
