HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 cc26-7W
36. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when major reconstruction work on the Tarbert—Rodel road in the Isle of Harris under the Crofter Counties Programme was discontinued and why; and when it is intended to complete the rest of this road on a major reconstruction standard.

Mr. Maclay

A scheme under the Crofter Counties Programme covering five miles of this road was authorised in 1950. Since this was completed a scheme for another three-quarters of a mile has been authorised and work is now in progress on it.

I understand that Inverness County Council is reviewing the priority of Crofter County schemes within the county, and when I receive its recommendations, and also the recommendations of the Highlands Advisory Panel on the road programme in the Highlands generally, I will consider when further work can be authorised on this road.

37. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the people of Quidinish, Isle of Harris, have been denied a village road for nearly 100 years; whether he has yet agreed to the request for a grant towards its cost from Inverness County Council; and what are the reasons for his decision.

Mr. Maclay

I am aware of the need for a road to serve this township and I hope to be able to make an offer of grant to the county council for this road very shortly.
