HC Deb 09 February 1955 vol 536 c213W
Mr. Page

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what type of road lighting his Department recommends for classified roads in built-up areas; and what information he can give as to the safety value of that type of lighting.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

My Department has advised the lighting authorities to adopt the lighting standards recommended by the Departmental Committee on Street Lighting. The standards recommended for busy classified roads in built-up areas are such as should make the use of headlamps by motorists unnecessary. Where lighting of that standard is provided the risk of traffic accidents by night should be little, if any, greater than by day.
