HC Deb 04 July 1940 vol 362 cc1023-4W
Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Minister of Supply how many tons of scrap-iron were recovered in the United Kingdom, Scotland and Greenock, respectively, during each of the last four weeks for which returns are available; and whether he has any statement to make on measures to increase such recovery?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

The returns received from the local authorities cover in each case the calendar month, and deal not with quantities recovered, but with quantities sold. The latest returns received in the Ministry of Supply relate to the month of May. They are—17,411 tons by local authorities in the United Kingdom, 1,138 tons by local authorities in Scotland and 17 tons by the Greenock authority. In order to increase the recovery of scrap metals my right hon. Friend has issued compulsory directions to all local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales with a population of over 10,000, requiring them to provide efficient schemes for the salvage of certain materials including scrap metals.
