HC Deb 21 February 1940 vol 357 cc1371-2W
Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that much discontent and distress exists in certain quarters in Greenock at the large percentage of dismissals of employés from one sugar refinery in Greenock while other refineries are working to capacity, and working overtime in addition; and whether he can arrange contracts so as to secure the full use of these refineries, and the full and, at the same time, uniform employment of employés?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

The curtailment of raw sugar supplies has involved a reduction in the throughput of sugar refineries, and this is reflected in employment. The reduction in supplies has been applied to all refineriespro rata, and the consequent reorganisation is a matter for the industry. I understand that it has been found most economical to close the smallest refinery at Greenock
