§ Mr. L. Smithasked the Minister of Labour whether it has been brought to his notice, in connection with the shortage of domestic servants and the disinclination of volunteers for training, that many new houses erected nowadays do not contain proper accommodation for maids, especially when families increase; and what steps he is taking to impress on all concerned the desirability of better provision of such accommodation?
§ Mr. E. BrownI am not in a position to say whether the statement contained in the first part of the question is correct. It is obvious, however, that lack of proper accommodation must add1874W considerably to the difficulty of getting or retaining, resident maids, and I have no doubt that this is well known to most mistresses already.
