HC Deb 15 May 1930 vol 238 c2069W
Mr. J. GARDNER

asked the President of the Board of Education the number of training schools for nursery school teachers in existence; the number of teachers and assistants trained annually; how the schools are grant-aided; and the annual cost of grants?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

Four training colleges offer special facilities for training for nursery school teaching, either as part of the ordinary course leading to recognition as a certificated teacher, or in the form of a supplementary period of training for experienced teachers. Grant is payable in respect of each resident student at the rate of £60 per annum, but the Board's regulations do not prescribe any particular qualifications or course of training for teachers in nursery schools, and it is not possible to say how many persons are trained annually for this branch of the teaching service, or what is the annual amount of the grants paid in respect of their training.
