asked the Home Secretary what was the total cost of maintaining the Metropolitan police force in the year ending April, 1914, and the year ending April, 1928; what were the amounts provided by the Treasury and the local authorities, respectively, in each of those years; and the amounts in the levied for police rates in those years?

The total net cost of the Metropolitan police for the financial years ending 31st March, 1914, and 31st March last was £2,591,416 and £7,114,587 and the police rate was 2081W 6¾d. and 1s. 0¼d. in the £1. In 1913–14 the cost was divided between the Exchequer and the rates approximately in the proportion of four-ninths and five-ninths; it is now shared equally.
