HC Deb 16 May 1928 vol 217 c1052W
Mr. C. EDWARDS

asked the Minister of Labour whether he has received letters from the clerk to the Llantarnam Urban District Council and similar bodies in Monmouthshire requesting him to enter into an arrangement with them about the employment of unemployed persons on work of urgent necessity, they to receive the unemployment benefit due to such persons and to pay the trade union rates applicable to the district; and will he state the attitude of his Department to this suggestion?

Mr. BETTERTON

I have received these communications. The suggestion, which is one for a subsidy of wages out of the Unemployment Fund and would require legislation, is not one I am able to entertain.
