Captain BENNasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what commitments bind this country to the creation and upholding of Arab States in the Near East?
§ Mr. AMERYApart from this country's definite treaty obligations towards Iraq, the principal pledge of the nature referred to in the hon. and gallant Member's question was the undertaking given during the War that His Majesty's Government would recognise and support the independence of the Arabs within specified territorial limits. Other pledges generally following the lines of that undertaking were subsequently given to the various communities in Iraq and elsewhere.
