HC Deb 22 November 1920 vol 135 cc71-2W
Lieut.-Colonel M. WILSON

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture whether 10 new officials have recently been appointed as district and assistant inspectors and clerks in the North-Eastern Sea Fisheries District; whether the salaries of these officials are included in the Estimates already presented to the House; and whether the work apportioned to these officials is work which is at present performed by the existing sea fisheries committees?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

None of the officers of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry are specifically allocated to the North-Eastern Sea Fisheries District, but one assistant inspector and three clerks have recently been appointed to the headquarter offices which are situated in that district. The salaries of these officers will be charged to the salaries sub-head of the Ministry's Vote already presented to this House. They are, as my hon. and gallant Friend will be aware, the Ministry's local representatives on all matters connected with fisheries, and their duties are not restricted as are those of the officials of the local sea fisheries committees to the consideration of matters which concern only inshore fisheries. Their principal duties concern the deep-sea fisheries which are altogether outside the jurisdiction of the local sea fisheries committees.
