HC Deb 13 February 1911 vol 21 cc842-3W
Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked the Home Secretary what has been the cost up to date of the extra police imported into the Rhondda and Aberdare Valleys in connection with the labour troubles; and whether the whole of the cost is to be borne by the county council?

Mr. CHURCHILL

As stated in my reply to the hon. Member for Mile End Division on Wednesday last, all the Metropolitan police who have been employed in South Wales will receive, over and above the rate of remuneration sanctioned for Metropolitan police serving outside the Metropolitan police district, extra allowances graded according to their ranks. The amount of these extra allowances, which will be defrayed from the Exchequer, is estimated at not more than £15,000; the other charges involved are repayable by the county of Glamorgan, but I cannot yet state their amount.

Mr. HARRY LAWSON

asked the Home Secretary whether any extra pay will be allowed for extra duty or overtime done by the metropolitan police in consequence of the continued absence in South Wales of the constables stationed there; whether extra duty is still imposed on any part of the force; what money allowance will be made to those constables who have been invalided in the course of the disturbances; for how long the detachments of constables have been kept in Wales; and whether there is any precedent for keeping a large body of police outside their administrative area for so long a time?

Mr. CHURCHILL

No extra duty or overtime calling for pecuniary recognition has been done by the Metropolitan police in consequence of the absence of constables in South Wales. The first detachment was sent on the 8th November, additional detachments being sent on the 9th and 12th November. These men have gradually been withdrawn, and the last contingent of fifty men returned to London on Saturday. In connection with the Yorkshire and Derbyshire coal strike in 1893, 374 police officers were withdrawn from duty in the metropolis for ten weeks Injured police received full pay while on the sick list. Happily none have been invalided from the service.
