HL Deb 17 June 1965 vol 267 cc195-6

Order of the Day read for the Bill to be considered on Report.

LORD HUGHES

My Lords, the need for this Order arises from an alteration in the rules for admission to the Writers to the Signet Society made in 1959. Until then, only persons who had been apprentices to members of the Society were eligible for admission. In that year membership was extended to other classes of persons. The existing Widows' Fund Order of 1955 operates fairly for those persons, except that it does not allow the collector to impose any tax in lieu of the apprentice tax which they have escaped paying. This Order imposes a special admission tax in lieu. The Order has been unopposed throughout. I beg to move that this Bill be now considered on Report.

Moved, That the Bill be now considered on Report.—(Lord Hughes.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
