HL Deb 06 May 1926 vol 64 c118

LORD OLIVIER had given Notice to ask the Secretary of State for India to give this House information as to the agreement which it is reported in the Press has been arrived at between the Government of the Union of South Africa and the Government of India with a view to an amicable solution of problems which have arisen in connection with the residence of persons of Indian descent in the territories of the Union; and to move for Papers.

The noble Lord said: My Lords, I beg to ask your Lordships' leave to postpone this Question. When I put it upon the Paper I desired to bring before your Lordships' House what seemed to be a very important development in the relations between two Dominions of the Crown, and I understood that the noble Earl the Secretary of State for India would be glad to accept my invitation to make a statement of public interest upon that topic. It is quite impossible at the present moment to obtain that publicity for readers in this country and elsewhere that I should have desired for the noble Earl's reply, and accordingly I beg leave to postpone this Question to a date unnamed.

Motion, by leave, put off sine die.
