HL Deb 13 December 1926 vol 65 cc1556-7

Clause 4, page 4, line 10, at end insert the following new subsection: ( ) If representations with respect to any proposed statutes are made to the Commissioners by the governing body of any college, school or institution which is at the commencement of this Act a school of the University in the Faculty of Theology, objecting to any alteration which would be necessitated by the making of the statute in the constitution of the college, school or institution, or in respect of the appointment of teachers therein or the financial administration thereof, the proposed statute shall, unless the objection be withdrawn, be modified so as not to necessitate the alteration objected to.

THE EARL OF AIRLIE

My Lords, the second Amendment gives effect to a promise made by the President of the Board of Education to the theological schools which had expressed the apprehension that their denominational character would be affected by any statute. I understand that this Amendment has been inserted after consultation with the noble Earl who expressed concern upon the point and with representatives of the theological schools. I understand that their views have been met. I beg to move that the House agrees with the Commons Amendment.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(The Earl of Airlie.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
