HC Deb 23 April 2004 vol 420 c529
Mr. Eric Forth (Bromley and Chislehurst) (Con)

On a point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. Have you been approached by the Government, or more specifically by the Prime Minister, for them to seek leave to come to the House to explain the complete shambles and uncertainty over the referendum on the European Union constitution? It would appear that, outside the House, the Prime Minister is now giving contradictory indications, but he has not come here to clarify his position or that of the Government. It is surely very unsatisfactory that press conferences should be told by the Prime Minister what he thinks may or may not happen, while we here in the House of Commons are left in the dark. Has the Prime Minister asked whether he can come to the House to clarify the position, or will we be left in a state of complete chaos, confusion and uncertainty?

Madam Deputy Speaker

I can inform hon. Members that, at this moment in time, I have had no request from the Prime Minister or another member of the Government to come to the House.
