HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 cc71-2
Mr. Clappison

I beg to move amendment No. 52, in page 49, line 2, leave out 'twelve months' and insert '2 years'.

Madam Deputy Speaker

With this, it will be convenient to discuss Government amendments Nos. 53 to 55.

Mr. Clappison

We undertook in Committee to reflect on the maximum period for reviewing a deferred action notice. Bearing in mind the need to strike a sensible balance between the duty of formal enforcement action and the burdens that that can place on local authorities, we have concluded that 24 months is an appropriate period.

Mr. Raynsford

It falls to me only to note that this is yet another Labour amendment in Committee that has been accepted in full by the Government. They may have changed the words but the effect is exactly that of our amendment. We regard this as another way in which we have helped to improve the Bill.

Amendment agreed to.

Amendments made: No. 53, in page 49, line 4, leave out 'twelve months' and insert '2 years'.

No. 54, in page 49, line 4, at end insert—

'The Secretary of State may by order amend this subsection so as to specify such other period or periods as he considers appropriate.'.

No. 55, in page 49, line 5, leave out 'They' and insert `The authority'.—[Mr. Brandreth.]
