HC Deb 26 November 1993 vol 233 c691 9.34 am
Mr. David Hinchliffe (Wakefield)

I wish to present a petition signed by about 6,000 people from the Wakefield area urging the Government not to introduce VAT on public transport. The petition draws attention to the public concern in my constituency and elsewhere over the impact of introducing VAT on public transport on poorer sections of the community, and especially the increase in car journeys that are likely to arise as a direct result.

I am happy to endorse the petition, which states: Wherefore, your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House will take care to reject any moves to impose VAT on bus and coach fares and to ensure the maintenance of zero rating of public transport. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, etc.

To lie upon the Table.
