HC Deb 14 May 1993 vol 224 c1106

Order for Second Reading read.

Hon. Members

Object.

Madam Deputy Speaker

Second Reading what day?

Mr. Alfred Morris (Manchester, Wythenshawe)

Noting the objection of the hon. Member for Wanstead and Woodford (Mr. Arbuthnot), Friday 2 July, Madam Deputy Speaker.

Second Reading deferred till Friday 2 July.

Mr. Ray Powell (Ogmore)

On a point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. Do you realise that the Bill to which an objection has been made was debated for some seven hours—

Madam Deputy Speaker

Order. I am sorry, but the House cannot debate the merits or otherwise of the Bill.

Mr. Powell

Further to that point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. I am referring not to the merits of the Bill, but to the fact that a private Member's Bill intended to help disabled people was debated for seven hours, and cannot now be debated further on the Floor of the House because an objection has been made.

Madam Deputy Speaker

Unfortunately, our procedures do not allow us to discuss that point.
