HC Deb 07 July 1993 vol 228 c442 11.42 pm
Mr. Alan Simpson (Nottingham, South)

- I present a petition gathered by people in Nottingham which comprises over 6,000 signatures. It declares the petitioners' concern about the poverty affecting the lives of young people as a result of the harsh and discriminatory nature of the age-related benefits system. The petition says: The Petitioners therefore request that, in order to alleviate youth poverty, the House of Commons urge the Government to restore the right to income support to 16 and 17 year olds who cannot find work or a suitable youth training placement, and to end the discriminatory treatment of 18–24 year olds, who live independently, by restoring their right to benefits on the same basis as those aged over 25.

To lie upon the Table.
