HC Deb 28 October 1992 vol 212 c1103

10 pm

Mr. Austin Mitchell (Great Grimsby)

I beg leave to present a humble petition from the members and supporters of the Great Northern and East Lincolnshire Railway plc and the Grimsby-Louth Railway Society in the counties of Humberside and Lincolnshire. It is a petition against the Peakes parkway scheme to convert disused railway into a road. The petition showeth: An Acquisition of Land Act 1981 public notice appeared in our local Grimsby Evening Telegraph dated August 6th 1992. It empowered Humberside county council to compulsorily purchase land in order to construct a new railway … (Peakes Parkway). In schedule 1, section 10 of the above notice, 600 square metres—part of grassed area adjacent to existing footway in Recreation Ground between disused railway land—formally known as 'The East Lines Main Line" and Doughty Road is to be compulsorily purchased from Grimsby Borough Council by Humberside County Council. The said plot is 'open space' land for which the Council propose not to give land in exchange, as required by section 19 of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981. We, the supporters and members of the Railway Company and Railway Society, who, due to the imminent construction of the above-mentioned road … are deeply concerned about our future environment, strongly object to this further encroachment on land. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your honourable House will urge the Humberside County Council not to proceed with the said compulsory purchase order and so preserve this open space land to be safely enjoyed by both present and future generations. The petition is signed by Christopher Leonard Birchmore, Douglas Chapman and 31 others.

To lie upon the Table.
