§ 12. Mr. ButlerTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what proportion of secondary school children in Wales are educated through the medium of Welsh.
§ Sir Wyn RobertsThe latest figures for 1990–91 show that about 15 per cent. of secondary school pupils in Wales are being educated in Welsh-speaking schools.
§ Mr. ButlerDid my right hon. Friend see the survey in The Sunday Times which showed that some Welsh-medium schools offer excellent education—some of the best education in the whole of the United Kingdom? Is not that a tribute to the quality of education within them?
§ Sir Wyn RobertsI agree with my hon. Friend and with the comments in the article to which he referred. The Welsh-medium schools provide a first-class education and I am happy to tell my hon. Friend that Welsh is being taught in eight out of 10 primary schools in Wales and in nine out of 10 secondary schools.
