HC Deb 11 June 1991 vol 192 cc780-1
14. Mr. John Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current level of unemployment in the United Kingdom and the north-west region of England.

Mr. Jackson

In April 1991, the seasonally adjusted level of unemployment in the United Kingdom was 2,175,100, compared with 275,300 in the north-west region.

Mr. Evans

Will the huge further increase in unemployment to be announced later this week demonstrate that the Government's economic strategy is working and that unemployment is a worthwhile price to pay to get inflation down?

Mr. Jackson

The hon. Gentleman might be interested to know that unemployment in his constituency of St. Helens is 34 per cent. lower than it was at the time of the last election.
