§ Lords amendment: No. 1, in line 27, leave out "have been reasonably" and insert "reasonably have been".
10.59 am§ Mr. Roy Hughes (Newport, East)I beg to move, that this House doth agree with the Lords in the said amendment.
The amendment is purely technical.
§ Sir Nicholas Bonsor (Upminster)I will not detain the House, but I could not help noticing that there was a split infinitive in the clause, so I welcome the amendment. We ought to ensure that legislation that goes through the House conforms with the highest educational standards, which the Government are considering carefully at the moment. I look forward to the day when the grammar of all our citizens has improved sufficiently to make it unnecessary to introduce such amendments at such a late stage in our proceedings.
§ Mr. James Arbuthnot (Wanstead and Woodford)It would be a pity if the opportunity were lost to congratulate the hon. Member for Newport, East (Mr. Hughes) on the skill with which he has piloted the Bill through the House. I hope that all hon. Members will join me in doing so.
§ Question put and agreed to.
