HC Deb 13 December 1991 vol 200 c1229 9.34 am
Mr. Michael Stern (Bristol, North-West)

I am delighted to have the opportunity to present a petition from nearly 1,200 residents of Little Stoke and Stoke Gifford in my constituency and from Stoke Lodge and Patchway in the constituency of my right hon. Friend the Member for Northavon (Mr. Cope), who is in his place for the presentation of the petition.

The petition relates to a proposal by Avon county council to place a permanent site for gipsies and other travellers at Clay lane, which is in the Bristol, North-West constituency, but is bounded by the constituency of Northavon. In the opinion of petitioners it would be a wholly inappropriate, unnecessary and damaging site. Among the claims in the petition are that no such site should be placed adjacent to residential or industrial premises, that it should be a minimum distance of 2 kilometres away from houses", that the running costs should be borne by the users, and That! Provision be made for compensation to those residents whose property is devalued … by the imposition of such a site. That! Due consideration should be given to the views of the Electorate, in the same manner as consideration is given to the demands of travellers. The petition concludes with the prayer that the petitioners will look to the House for relief.
