§ 6. Mr. ChapmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the Government's policy on providing equestrian, cycling or pedestrian bridges across, or tunnels under, major roads, and what criteria are laid down for such projects.
§ Mr. ChannonWe consider suggestions and proposals on their merits.
§ Mr. ChapmanWill my right hon. Friend look sympathetically at the need for a combined equestrian, pedestrian and cyclists' crossing on the section of the A1 between South Mimms and Stirling corner, not only because it is effectively of motorway standard, but because of the volume and velocity of the traffic on the road? For example, 800 horses are stabled in that corridor of that part of north London.
§ Mr. ChannonMy hon. Friend has raised this difficult matter assiduously on behalf of his constituents. As he says, the Al is a very large road with a great deal of traffic, which makes it very difficult to cure the problem of horses crossing it. What my hon. Friend suggests would cost a good deal and I shall have to consider it carefully, but it is an important point and I shall certainly look into it.
