§ Mr. Harry Greenway (Ealing, North)
To the honourable Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the humble petition of the residents of Greenfordin the names of Mrs. Paul of 82 Hicks avenue, Greenford and over 700 other people,sheweth that there has recently been a fatal accident at the zebra crossing at the junction of Cowgate road and Greenford road and that there have been many other less serious accidents there in recent years.I worked for two years to establish this crossing and the death of Mrs. Eula Lewis, a popular and respected local figure, who was knocked down by a van, has raised the fears of the community about the inadequacy of the crossing. The need to upgrade it to pelican status, which is what I had always hoped we would have, is now urgent in view of the death of Mrs. Lewis. It is constantly used by local disabled and mentally handicapped people and by mothers and children and others. The proposals by Ealing council to upgrade it are welcome but inadequate. We feel that the crossing—

§ Mr. GreenwayMay I finally say that I hope that the crossing will be upgraded to pelican status and, if necessary, resited in order for that to happen.
Wherefore your petitioners pray that your honourable House will urge the Secretary of State for Transport to have a pelican crossing installed at this junction and your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
