HC Deb 30 October 1987 vol 121 c561 9.35 am
Mr. Harry Greenway (Ealing, North)

I wish to present a petition: To the Honourable The Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled. The humble petition of the Greenford residential group for the environment is in the name of Mr. N. D. Keating and Mrs. C. A. Keating of 914 Greenford Road, Greenford, and has been signed by several hundred Greenford and Northolt residents.

The ratepayers of Greenford road, Oldfield lane, Bennett's avenue, Ingram way, Uneeda drive, Tees avenue and other surrounding roads in the neighbourhood are being subjected to what they feel to be inhuman conditions. They have been living under those conditions for many years. Heavy goods vehicles and commercial vehicles have caused massive damage to their homes, to roads, to water pipes, to gas pipes, which have been caused to leak, to sewers, which have been caused to smell foully, and to electricity supplies, including the obliteration of traffic lights, street lights and home lights and fires have been caused as a result.

The residents say that telephones have been put out of action by heavy drilling and day and night road works and that that work has caused deafness and nervous tension within the community. They are pleading to the London borough of Ealing to build a diversionary road to and from the different warehouses, factories, commercial stores and so on leading directly to the Western avenue through the industrial estate and bypassing Greenford road.

The residents also want relief from aircraft noise and other environmental damage over which the Government have indirect control. Wherefore your Petitioners pray that your Honourable House will do everything in its power to support the campaign for a relief road for commercial vehicles and an end to aircraft noise against the signature of the petition signed by many hundreds of people from the Greenford area. And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, etc.

To lie upon the Table.

Mr. Speaker

I understand that the hon. Member has a second petition. It might be for the convenience of the House if he presented them together.
