§ 8. Mr. BaldryTo ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the progress of the Anglo-Irish Agreement.
§ Mr. Tom KingWe are making worthwhile progress in our work under the agreement and are giving particular priority to our aim of enhancing security co-operation with the Republic of Ireland. The agreement has great potential to benefit all in Northern Ireland and the Republic.
§ Mr. BaldryDoes my right hon. Friend agree that all those who believe in the Union should support the Anglo-Irish Agreement in that the agreement is a guarantee from both Ireland and Britain that the status of Northern Ireland will never be changed against the wishes of the people of Northern Ireland?
§ Mr. KingThat assurance of the principle of consent is at the heart of the agreement. It is very important indeed, and I am grateful to my hon. Friend, even in his present condition, for his support.
