asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what involvement his Department has in promoting crime prevention projects through the community programme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

In October last year my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary announced an initiative designed to link the MSC community programme firmly with crime prevention projects. Since then a team has been set up within the Home Office to support the development of such projects. An explanatory booklet, "Crime Prevention and the Community Programme", has been widely distributed to various statutory and voluntary bodies in England and Wales to assist prospective sponsors.

Is my hon. Friend satisfied with progress on the projects which seek to curtail crime?

Mr. Shaw

I certainly would not say that we can be satisfied, but the increasing efforts made through the community programme and the substantial number of places that are being offered under it augur well for crime prevention in city centres.
