asked the Secretary of State for Energy what progress has been made so far in co-ordinating research and development into renewable sources of energy between the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Mr. David Hunt

The Government attach great importance to developing collaborative programmes in this area. Following the signing of the United Kingdom-United States bilateral exchange agreement on energy R and D on 24 October, expert workshops have taken place, and the scope for collaborative programmes in biofuels and passive solar design of buildings is being explored in detail.

Mr. Hayes

Does my hon. Friend agree that passive solar design can make a considerable contribution towards the heating and cooling of various designs of home and industrial plant? Will he ensure that his Department does everything it possibly can to encourage passive solar design?

Mr. Hunt

I totally agree with my hon. Friend, and I am happy to give him the assurance that he seeks.
