HC Deb 10 March 1986 vol 93 cc656-7
8. Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will meet the chairman of the British Gas Corporation to discuss the efficient use of energy.

Mr. Peter Walker

I regularly meet the chairman of the British Gas Corporation.

Mr. Pike

What positive steps do the Government propose to take to force British Gas to promote energy efficiency? Will the Government consider the possibility of making British Gas use some of its profits to promote energy efficiency?

Mr. Walker

I can only say that I am delighted with the enormous collaboration that I have had from the British gas industry in this sphere. It is organising a whole range of events up and down the country, quite a few of which I have had the privilege of attending.

Mr. Michael Morris

Does the efficient use of energy include the export of gas, and presumably, in the medium term, the import of gas? Can my right hon. Friend comment on that?

Mr. Walker

A statement was made last week on the policy for the export and import of gas. I shall send my hon. Friend a copy.
