HC Deb 14 January 1986 vol 89 cc915-6
14. Mr. Stern

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he is satisfied with the progress of the experimental fighter aircraft programme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Norman Lamont

The experimental aircraft programme is a technology demonstrator programme which will give us practical experience in the integration of the wide range of new technologies required for new, sophisticated combat aircraft.

Mr. Stern

In view of my hon. Friend's welcome reply earlier to the effect that contracts for part of this programme are likely to come up next summer, will he confirm that all the resources of his Department will be made available where necessary to those British companies which have already been involved in the groundwork, to ensure that they are not negotiated out of a substantial programme?

Mr. Lamont

I can certainly give my hon. Friend that assurance. We have meetings constantly with British industry and invite industry to tell us how we can help further in this programme.

Mr. McNamara

May I refer to the question that I put before? How can our European partners who will be engaged with us in developing the European fighter, which is based on our experience in EAP, depend upon the Government, following their shameful treatment on the helicopter issue?

Mr. Lamont

Our partners can depend absolutely upon the Government. I have already given the commitment that we are thoroughly in favour of continuing with EFA.
