HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 cc473-4
15. Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent discussions the Government have had with the British Medical Association on the assumptions for any estimate of casualties in the event of nuclear attack; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

None, Sir.

Mr. Strang

Does the Minister recall the dispute some years ago between the Government and the British Medical Association following the publication of the report on the effects of nuclear war? Do the Government agree with the BMA, or have they abandoned any attempt to estimate the length of survival, given certain assumptions in a nuclear war?

Mr. Shaw

The hon. Member will recall that the Government do not make detailed estimates of casualties, which would depend on the strategic intention of the enemy and other factors that cannot be predicted.
