HC Deb 12 February 1986 vol 91 c1071 11.58 pm
Mr. David Alton (Liverpool, Mossley Hill)

I wish to present a petition supported by 11,081 residents of Liverpool drawing attention to the plight of the Liverpool philharmonic orchestra, the Liverpool philharmonic hall and the Empire theatre, all of which are under threat of closure due to shortage of funds as a result of the abolition of the Merseyside county council.

The petitioners pray that your honourable House press the Minister for the Arts and the Secretary of State for the Environment to visit these two establishments as a matter of urgency and provide adequate support for the arts on Merseyside following the abolition of the Merseyside county council. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray, etc.
