HC Deb 30 January 1985 vol 72 c278
19. Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the total volume of cheese exported from the United Kingdom in 1984.

Mr. Channon

Thirty-two thousand tonnes of cheese and curd were exported in 1984.

Mr. Wigley

Is the Minister aware that producers in my constituency have been advised that they should expect a cut in the exports of cheese to markets such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and the Caribbean? Are the Government taking any steps to impose such an artificial restriction? If so, what is the reason for that?

Mr. Channon

Some of those points are probably matters for my right hon. Friends the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretary of State for Wales. I know of no plans deliberately to limit exports. We export a great deal of cheese, not only to the countries mentioned by the hon. Gentleman, but to Algeria. A great deal of Cheddar cheese is exported all over the world.
