HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 c111 10.10 pm
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Mr. Alexander Fletcher)

I beg to move, That the draft Gas Catalytic Heaters (Safety) Regulations 1984, which were laid before this House on 22 October, in the last Session of Parliament, be approved.

The regulations now before the House put on a permanent basis the prohibition which I placed last year on the supply of liquid petroleum gas catalytic heaters and replacement elements containing unbonded or loose asbestos.

The original prohibition was made by the Gas Catalytic Heaters (Safety) Order 1983, which was laid before Parliament on 18 November last year and came into operation three days later. With the expiry of the order on 21 November this year, a decision now has to be made on the future of the ban. It is my view that, in the interests of public safety, the ban should continue indefinitely.

Question put and agreed to.

Resolved, That the draft Gas Catalytic Heaters (Safety) Regulations 1984, which were laid before this House on 22 October, in the last Session of Parliament, be approved.
