HC Deb 08 May 1984 vol 59 c737 3.41 pm
Mr. Giles Radice (Durham, North)

I beg to ask leave to move the Adjournment of the House, under Standing Order No. 10, for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that shoud have urgent consideration, namely, recent developments in the teachers' dispute. The matter is specific because it is about recent developments in the dispute over teachers' pay. There is a day of action tomorrow and cover is being withdrawn in many areas. It is important because there are over 400,000 teachers in England and Wales, 70 per cent. of whom are paid under £10,000 a year and they perform a vital job —the education of our children. It is urgent because the Government's failure to support arbitration means that our children's schooling is likely to be disrupted.

Therefore, Mr. Speaker, I request that you give the matter priority.

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member for Durham, North (Mr. Radice) asks leave to move the Adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter that he thinks should have urgent consideration, namely, recent developments in the teachers' dispute. I have listened carefully to what the hon. Gentleman has said, but I regret that I do not consider that the matter that he has raised is appropriate for discussion under Standing Order No. 10 and, therefore, I cannot submit his application to the House.
