HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 c392
40. Mr. Canavan

asked the Solicitor-General for Scotland how many people are employed by the Crown Office at the old Royal High school building in Edinburgh.

The Solicitor-General for Scotland

The total number of persons employed in the Crown Office, Scotland, is 93.

Mr. Canavan

Does that include the Lord Advocate and the Solicitor-General for Scotland, who are squatting in a building which was earmarked for the Scottish Assembly, which is being denied to the people of Scotland despite the fact that over 70 per cent. of Scottish voters voted for pro-Assembly parties at the last general election?

Will the Solicitor-General for Scotland show us, by repeating to us his erstwhile views in favour of a devolved Scottish legislature dealing with Scottish legislation, that there is at least one honest Scottish Tory left?

The Solicitor-General for Scotland

The building does, indeed, include both the Lord Advocate and myself. The Royal High school building in Edinburgh was originally consecrated for the study of polite learning. When I listen to the hon. Member for Falkirk, West (Mr. Canavan), I see that there is a continuing need for it in Scotland.
