§ 11. Mr. Kenneth Carlisleasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will make a statement on the quality of the adult training which is to be expanded in line with the proposals in his White Paper, "Training for Jobs".
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonOne of the aims of the new strategy for adult training is to improve the quality and effectiveness of training provided or supported by the Manpower Services Commission by linking it more closely to the needs of industry and employment opportunities.
§ Mr. CarlisleDoes my hon. Friend accept that it is good news that the number of places for adult training is to be doubled? Will he ensure that those workers who, unhappily, are made redundant in such industries as heavy engineering can find training in the skills that are in demand?
§ Mr. MorrisonI am glad that my hon. Friend has recognised that the number of people trained every year will rise from 110,000 to 250,000. On his second point, of that 250,000, 110,000 will be unemployed, whereas at the moment there are 80,000.
