HC Deb 21 December 1984 vol 70 c685
Mr. Alfred Dubs (Battersea)

I wish to present a petition signed by some 20,000 people from my constituency and other parts of the United Kingdom and including, on my reckoning, at least 35 bishops, supporting Amnesty International's campaign against torture.

The petition urges Her Majesty's Government to support an effective United Nations convention against torture and in particular the extension of compensation for torture victims to include anyone who has been the victim of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; to support proposals, both at the United Nations and at the Council of Europe, to create an international commission to make unannounced visits to any place of detention; to intercede whenever and wherever possible on behalf of prisoners being tortured.

The petition has my full support.

To lie upon the Table.
